In Fond Memory of WILLIAM (BILL) J. SHAKESPEARE

 

Bill’s Navy career really began when he joined the Stretford Sea Cadets at the age of 12, he initially wanted to join the Royal Marines, but the recruiting office was closed for lunch, so he went to the Naval office next door and that was that, the start of his very enjoyable career. He trained as an EM before changing to the Reg Branch, he served 24 years ending in 1973 when he was the MAA at HMS Osprey.

 

During his time in the Navy, he was a keen footballer especially playing in goal then later becoming a Class 1 Referee and went on to officiate with the South Dorset Referees Association.

 

Bill met his wife Jen whilst they were both serving at HMS Vernon – they had 2 daughters and he had 2 sons from a previous marriage producing 7 grandchildren altogether.

 

On leaving the Navy he turned his interests back to Sea Cadets, became a Lt Cdr and spent many years with Harrogate Unit. He became the Commanding Officer and was awarded the MBE for his services. Under his command, the unit achieved many awards including Burgees, Pennants and National titles for drill, piping and band trophies. He was very proud of his achievements.

 

Along side his Sea Cadet duties he became a Security Officer at Harewood House and eventually becoming House Manager then latterly a volunteer – it was a job he loved and was still working up to a month before he passed away at the age of 91.

 

He was a typical “Seadog” and his sense of humour was second to none. His ashes will be scattered at Harewood House after a small private ceremony.
